The Substitue

The Substitute is an MTV game show where a "substitute professor" walks into a regular class room and conducts a fun quiz game on the spot to the amusement of the unsuspecting students.

The winner walks away with $5,000.

Recently a Peaks' resident - Margaret - took the prize in NJIT! We are very happy for her. Margaret has a sweet personality, volunteers as an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and has a soft corner for aging seniors in nursing homes. She desires to become a doctor some day. We wish her the best for her dreams to come true!

Now, sit back, relax and enjoy the show! I am sure you will join me in congratulating Margaret!

Tips for Hurricane Preparation

Written By NRIGirl on Saturday, August 27, 2011 | Saturday, August 27, 2011

Sharing with you what our insurance agent sent us on preparing for hurricane season.

STEP 1: Take note now of your insurance carriers and policy numbers.
Put all your policy information in one safe place (it's possible you may have policies with multiple carriers). This will help you to start the claims process after a storm.

STEP 2: Do a home inventory. Take pictures of your valuables or use a video camera. And to make it easier, Allstate New Jersey has a home inventory brochure you can download at allstate.com/getready.

STEP 3: Protect your property. Don’t let landscaping and trees become a wind hazard. Remove damaged tree limbs from your yard now.

STEP 4: Stock your emergency supply kit. When you’re at the store, buy extra water and non-perishable food. Find a complete shopping list at allstate.com/getready.

STEP 5: Plan your evacuation route. Learn the best evacuation routes and plan a meeting point at least 50 miles inland in case your family gets separated.

Stay safe!

Ready or not here I come

Written By NRIGirl on Friday, June 3, 2011 | Friday, June 03, 2011

Ready or not here I come!
Here I come with my wand
Here I am - the Tomorrow
You didn't expect so soon.

Ready or not here I am!
Here I am with new name
Here I am called Today
I changed my name from Tomorrow.

Ready or not there I go!
There I go with my wand
There I go - the Today
You couldn't believe so soon.

Ready or not there I was!
There I was with old name
Now I am called Yesterday
I changed my name from Today...

Life Cycle

As the day passes
Slow and steady
The mind always races
Of things at home

Clothes to be folded
Sheets to be laundered
Dinner to be made &
Children to be fed

As the night progress
Fast and Fury
The mind always ponders
Of things at work

Follow up discussions
Meetings & deadlines
Alternate logic
For optimal solutions

New day dawns &
New night sets
As the cycle of life
Moves on and on and on...

Dream coming true

End of the day as I reached home last night
Tired and weary after long hours

T'was the coldest of nights or it felt so that hour
As I rushed out of car to get back indoors

In a momentary instinct I glanced up the skies
There stood I still taken aback

In the darkest of night stars shining so bright
Not one of them missing from the wonderful sight

Once more I became my fresh cheery self
Amazed by the breathtaking night sky delight

Stood there me frozen as more time slipped by
Forgetting the chill of the night then & there

My hair dancing over my face with such joy
I happend to wonder if it was just a dream

Slowly I gazed down to look around me
Leaning against the car in full business attire

In front of my home and trees as backdrop
With dinner and children all taken care of

No it's not dream, it is dream coming true
Answered myself as I got lost again...

Conversation with the stars

Star of yonder, Star of night
Twinkling in the night so bright
Tell me what is your sweet name
Jewel of wonder, share with me
What are you upto in your race
To trace the whole earth in one night?

Girl of wonder, Girl so nice
Awake at night with eyes so bright
My name is same as your sweet name
Girl of wonder, with sweetest smile
I'm tracing the earth every night to
Chat with little girls just like you

Star of yonder, Star of night
Traveling with the moon tonight
Tell me how the earth looks from there
Do you see the bluest skies
Lilacs,lillies, the robin nests
And how about the butterflies?

Can I miss such pretty sights of
The mesmerizing earth beneath
Wonder of wonders, next to heavens
Oh how I too wish I was there
Looking up the night sky light
And talking to a star from there?

Count to three and be wide awake as
I get ready to jump from here
Make sure you see me shooting by
Wish your fondest dreams come true
I too will ask the Master to
Grant your wishes soonest soon...

Dearest star that flew by tonight
I am sure you landed safe and sound
My wish came true to have you next door
Let us chat with the stars out there
In the morning, when they all sleep
I will show you some butterflies...

Please Be My Host

Written By NRIGirl on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 | Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Years ago my friend Sunitha had requested a favor from me. She wanted me to entertain a guest her son would send me by mail. A guest? By mail? Exactly!

Shawn, a Kindergartner at that time was involved in a project learning about places, people, culture etc with the help of Flat Stanley - a paper cut out "guy". The idea was that he would mail me Flat Stanley in an envelope and I should treat him like a guest and show him around places and return to the sender with a little note explaining what we both did together!

It was a memorable two weeks we spent with Flat Stanley who had arrived from LA. We mostly showed him around our neighborhood and he was a great "help" setting up our outdoor play set. He was mailed back to LA in the same envelope he had arrived in.

Out of the blue, I remembered Flat Stanley and thought of checking with you guys if you are up to some fun. Let me explain the plan so that you can decide if you want to be part of it or not. It could be a fun way to get your kids involved too!

1. There are two templates of Flat Stanley posted below, one in all color and the other is blank which you could customize as you wish.
2. Click on the image you like so that it opens by itself on a separate page.
3. Print out the copy in a 8 X 10 paper
4. Stick it to a thicker card board or chart board or similar for ease of use.
5. Color it, sign it, customize it the way you like it
6. Cut out the outlines to remove white spaces around.
7. Now this is your Flat Stanley!
8. Next, you can take him to places, pose with him and have as much fun as possible and don't forget to click some pictures.
9. Email me back the pictures with a little note; at nrigirl@hotmail.com
10. I will then post your Flat Stanley with your note and a link to your blog!
11. Readers can vote on the best dressed Flat Stanley
12. The winner will receive a Flat Stanley specially made and signed by NRIGirl with a lovely handwritten note! (I know it is not very motivating; but for the little kids and for the kid in you, it is sure worth the try!)

I almost forgot, the last day to participate is 25-JUN-2011 25-JUL-2011!

Crystal Rivera - The Girl with a Mission!

Written By NRIGirl on Friday, May 6, 2011 | Friday, May 06, 2011

When most of the eleven year olds care the least for others, Peaks resident Crystal Rivera is on a quest to help others! It is a rare quality to come by and doesn't immediately attract supporters but Crystal doesn't budge! She is on a mission now to help her school staff who has lost everything in a recent fire. Crystal is accepting cash donations or gift cards from department stores to help this family in need.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Please welcome Crystal Rivera as she comes here to introduce herself and share her thoughts, as part of our getting to know series. And please don't forget to help her help others. If you have any specific questions, please call 973-220-4414.

? Can you please tell us about yourself?
! My name is Crystal. I'm Eleven years old.  I'm a resident of the Peaks and to go Jefferson Township Middle School.  I love school and everything about school.  That's a  little about me!

? How long have you been in the Peaks? Would you like to give us a little background of finding your home in the Peaks?
! I've live in the Peaks for three years!

? If there is one thing you could change about Peaks what would it be?
! I would change the people to be more helpful to one and other we never know when is going to be us in that position.  I send an email to all the residents of the peak and only one responded to someone in need.

? What would you like to share with fellow residents?
! What I would like to share with my fellow residents is that there is a very important person at Jefferson Township Middle School that has a tragedy, her house has burned and she has nothing.  I would like to her so I am requesting for donations, Monetary, gift cards or anything you can donate.  Any little bit helps.

? How do you define Joy?
! I define joy as happiness, proud in helping others.

Is Spring still up in the air at the Peaks?

Written By NRIGirl on Friday, April 15, 2011 | Friday, April 15, 2011

It has been weeks since Spring 2011 was officially "announced". However in the Peaks we haven't seen any sign of it. Okay, the grass is green, but that's about it. The trees are still twigs, we see some sprouts here and there but no trace of even a single flower!

Does Spring always come last to Peaks? Haven't noticed it before. But it seems like a longer wait this year.

Trust your hopes are high as mine as we await this Spring which is running late. Believe it or not, it will be here before we know it!

Until then, stay warm...

Epic Nature - Spring
A Poem by Rachel Israel

In Spring I hear water trickle down the stream sparkling like a crystal sea
In Spring I see the fruitful trees, healthy trees, so many bees
In Spring I sit on dew covered grass, short and long grass
In Spring I see beautiful flowers, roses like rubies and lilacs like diamonds

In Spring I look at tall snow capped mountains from a distance
In Spring I see the hills genuinely and beautifully touched with sunshine
In Spring the sky looks baby blue meeting with the bright yellow sun
In Spring the clouds look like giant, white, fluffy cotton balls

In Spring I watch glistening fish jumping up the stream
In Spring I spot a bear wearing brown coat and spying on a fish
In Spring I walked around and saw a crocodile lurking for prey
In Spring I see an eagle with piercing eyes elegantly and gracefully flying

In Spring I plant some vegetation in rich soil
In Spring beautiful crops spring up from the seeds
In Spring I see butterflies with wings glistening under the sun
In Spring I see small green insects hanging by a silk thread

I know I am ready for the Spring! Are you?

Book Recommendation by Salvatore Zurzolo

Peaks resident Salvatore Zurzolo recommends a book by his colleague Elijah Muhammad. The rest is in Salvatore's words:

A colleague of mine has self-published a book, I thought some of you might be interested or know someone who might be interested. Here is the press release: The book can be purchased exclusively at http://www.blurb.com/

Entertainment Photographer Elijah Muhammad and former entertainment publicist and best-selling author LaJoyce Brookshire have joined forces to release the book The Last Listening Party of The Notorious B.I.G.

In 1997, Elijah Muhammad was the official photographer for the listening party of Life After Death the new album release from The Notorious B.I.G. held at Arista Records in New York City hosted by his publicist LaJoyce Brookshire. No one would have thought that two weeks later Biggie would be dead.

LaJoyce Brookshire was Arista's Director of R&B Publicity and handled Biggie from the beginning of his career until his death who then became a Naturopathic Doctor and the best-selling author of Soul Food, Faith Under Fire, and Ask The Good Doctor. With her first-hand narrative she takes readers on a
never-before-told behind the scenes journey from her first encounter with Biggie to their last.

On the pages of this book Elijah's photography captures a rare side of Biggie with journalists in his element...music -- his music. Elijah has photographed such icons as Vanessa Williams, Queen Latifah, and Sean Diddy Combs to name a few and has held gallery showcases featuring his photography. Muhammad and Brookshire are touring sharing with audiences about their experiences with the larger than life icon and how collecting photography can be profitable. This pictorial is a collectors item with these never-before-released photographs bringing new meaning to the words of Life After Death.

The book can be purchased exclusively at http://www.blurb.com/

We are Family

We can't deny the fact our faces light up when we meet a fellow Peaks resident somewhere unexpected such as in a flea market or nail salon or children's sports and the like. We connect at once like we are family.

How would you feel if you run into fellow residents at some 30,000 ft in the clouds? Elated for sure right? That's exactly how we felt last summer. While traveling to India we met at least three other Peaks families in the flight and heard a fourth family was on the same flight too! One of us exclaimed that it seemed like we booked a flight just for Peaks! That's how happy we felt flying together.

Now the question is, do we share the same cheer once inside the community? Do we even know the names of our neighbors, their children? What is preventing us from connecting with one another? I am guilty myself of not making enough friends and not going the extra mile and not doing enough within the community. Once I started realizing what was lacking I couldn't help but start a campaign to bring us all closer, hence this attempt at the web site.

If only we can all come out of our shell and look around us and do the least we can, I believe Peaks will soon be a Big Happy Family! Care to share your ideas? Please use the comments section below.

Birds I view

Written By NRIGirl on Monday, March 28, 2011 | Monday, March 28, 2011

Spring & Summer are beautiful time for bird watching. Here at the Peaks we are blessed with frequent visits from our feathered friends of different shape, color, size and model.

All it takes is a simple inexpensive bird feeder and of course some bird seeds. You will not be disappointed by the beautiful array of birds that will fly into your own backyard for an up close display.

Here's some pictures from last summer. If anyone has tips to share please feel free to add them in the comments section below...

Borrow an Egg

This is a true Peaks story: A while ago I listened to a radio program where someone recommended the best way to make friends is to borrow an egg. Funny as it may sound, when I look back that's exactly how our parents and grand parents and many generations before them made their friends - by borrowing an egg or a cup of sugar or flour or two onions or some curry leaves or some coins or a hairpin or a cooking pan or a ladder or a bicycle pump or you name it!

Only recently I could put this in to practice here in the United States of America. In a recent get together with friends, as the kids sat around the kitchen table for a cookie baking session, we suddenly realized we had run out of the all-purpose-flour, the main ingredient needed for the cookie dough. It was Christmas day and so all shops were closed. As I was contemplating how not to disappoint the kids, all of a sudden I remembered the radio advice to 'borrow-an-egg'.

Once I made up my mind to do just that, the next step was to identify whom to run to. There are few known families in our neighborhood one or two were off on vacation and others weren't all that close. However I decided to go knocking at a good neighbor's house few blocks away, borrowing some 'all-purpose-flour'. She was extremely delighted that I thought of her and came to her. As she measured and gave me a cup or two of the flour, the level of our friendship surely went up by a measure or two...

I had taken a little gift for her children as it was Christmas day - which was a special surprise for them. I got to know her husband had just had some surgery - so it cheered her up that someone showed up unexpectedly at the door - even if to borrow something ... I was glad too that I could bring in some unexpected holiday cheer to a dear family and that the little kids around my kitchen table could now proceed with their cookie baking session as planned.

The simple act of "borrowing" brought such widespread cheer in so many of us that night. It sure made our holiday very special.

When was the last time you borrowed something or made a new friend? If it has been a while or never, I encourage you to act on it. It doesn't come easily. It takes some courage and of course some humility. Try borrowing an egg or a cup of sugar or flour or some curry leaves or some coins or a hairpin or a cooking pan or a ladder or a bicycle pump or you name it!

You will be amazed at how many new gems you can collect for your very own crown of friends by doing this simple act. As you try, please feel free to add your experience to the comments section below, I would love to hear. Happy borrowing! And of course (it goes without saying), Happy lending too...!

"We have known Mr. Dave for over 3 years now. We can honestly tell you he is the best in this area. His rates are very reasonable and the best part is he comes home to teach - if not for that it would have been extremely difficult to fit in music lessons in our schedule. Our three children just adore him and we all look forward to his weekly lessons..." ~ Israels

Welcome Home!

Written By NRIGirl on Thursday, March 24, 2011 | Thursday, March 24, 2011

Hello! Welcome to the Peaks at Jefferson. The Peaks at Jefferson is a beautiful mountaintop community adjacent to a beautiful lake - Lake Hopatcong.

Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in the state of New Jersey. The Lake itself offers year round activities for the local residents such as fly fishing, boating, ice fishing etc. You may want to check out the Wikipedia page to know more about Lake Hopatcong.

Jefferson Township which borders the lake is boasted as the Year Round Recreation Capitol of New Jersey and lives up to its name! It is a privilege to be blessed with so many volunteers come forward to engage children and adult in year round recreational activities.

Sunrise Communities the builders who designed and developed The Peaks share in their own words:

" The Peaks at Jefferson Village - - a unique community of classic, stylish single family homes situated in one of the most breathtaking locations in prestigious Morris County, New Jersey. Surrounded by a host of attractive amenities, The Peaks uniquely combines the advantages of Morris County's historic natural beauty with all the conveniences of a suburban location..."
The Peaks is undoubtedly one of the best place to call Home! I am sure each of the residents will feel the same.
